The Department of Public Safety confirmed Tuesday that the state has accepted and adopted a series of rules and regulations for the legal sports betting market. Operators were allowed to start pre-launch advertising and promotions and customers were allowed to create accounts as of Wednesday.

Milt Champion, executive director of the Gambling Control Unit, was told to take a hiatus last Wednesday after it was revealed he posted sexist and racially-charged tweets. The suspension was announced shortly after a reporter for the Portland Press Herald inquired about the tweets.

The Gambling Control Unit of Maine, the state’s operator, is looking to get Caesars set up in time for football season, though the company nor the state has provided an official launch date. There is no registered interest from other national operators in joining Caesars in Maine.
